Information for Tenants

We would like to thank all of our tenants for their continued support of Rotherham’s allotments. We hope that you find your plot productive and rewarding.

We welcome you to send us photographs of your plots, especially ‘before and after’ shots. These can be emailed to us or sent via our Facebook page.

Conduct on Site

As a plot holder you need to respect your fellow plot holders. Tenants have a duty of care to each other and also to visitors to the allotment site. This includes not removing items from any other plot onsite, whether deemed tenanted or not. Allotments should be family-friendly places so abusive behaviour will not be tolerated.

Health and Safety is also the tenant’s own responsibility and allotments are entered at the tenant’s / co-worker’s / visitor’s own risk.

Allotment Rules

On payment of your invoice, all tenants agree to abide by the Allotment Rules and are also subject to a tenancy agreement. Please note that tenants must not remove items from any other plot, whether it be tenanted or deemed vacant. Tenancies are subject to cultivation inspections using this Plot Cultivation Criteria. Tenants found not to be cultivating to an expected standard will be given an opportunity to rectify this. If not rectified, your tenancy may be subject to termination.

Also on receipt of your rent payment, this will allocate you a share in the Alliance. A share certificate can be provided on request. By paying rent and holding a share, this means that you are able to contribute to decisions made by the Alliance via voting at our AGM. Only 1 vote per tenant is permitted.

Co-Workers

Co-workers must be registered on the tenancy of the plot and can only be transferred the plot if they have been listed for a minimum of 12 months and have worked the plot in that time.

Information for tenants on Society-Managed Sites:

On a society-managed site, an elected committee is responsible for the day-to-day running of the allotment including plot lets and collecting rents. Committees are set up democratically and must run to a set of objectives called a Constitution.

Please see Model Constitution – RAA 2021 for a model constitution which a site must run by. Committees are permitted to add to this. This also applies to the allotment rules. The RAA allotment rules are the basic rules to be followed by all sites / tenants which then can be added to by the committee.

It is of great benefit for a site to be society-run as many decisions can be made at site-level and external funding can be sought for constituted groups which can be used for site improvements.
